Savory Rice Balls

This name definitely won’t ring any bell in your mind, because this recipe is definitely unique and belongs to my Vadaval community. In our region some call it Mudaki, some call it Mutake, Some call it Muthe. In a nutshell, all these words mean one single thing and that is “a fist”. And the reason is its shape. Yes, no special cutter or any other equipment is required to prepare this. You just have to squeeze batter in your fist and it forms the required shape.


  • 1 cup of rice flour
  • 1 cup of finely chopped onion
  • 1 cup spring onion and coriander, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 1/3 cup of field beans/ broad beans/ Vaal
  • 1 ½ teaspoon ginger garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 cup fresh grated coconut
  • Salt as per taste


  • Boil one cup of water in a large pot.
  • While the water boils, we will prepare the savory mixture. Add rice flour, onion, chilies, field beans, ginger garlic paste, turmeric, garam masala, grated coconut, salt in a large bowl and mix well.

  • Once bubbles start appearing on water, add the above mixture in it and turn off the stove. Mix it well with spatula. Keep lid on the pot. Keep it aside for ten minutes.
  • Now take off the lid and add spring onion and coriander to the mixture and mix it well.
  • Form rice balls with the help of your fist as showed in below picture.
  • In a steamer, put banana leaves and keep rice balls on it. Steam for ten to twelve minutes.
  • Garnish with coriander and freshly grated coconut and serve hot. Else enjoy with ketchup when it is hot.
